TRUC LAM SCHOLARSHIP
At any country or region on our planet, there will always be children, the future sprouts, struggling in the storms of poverty. Sri Lanka is no different, with many people striving to overcome difficult circumstances, live harmoniously, and diligently practice the Buddha’s teachings. In such circumstances, many children here cannot go to school despite their strong desire and good academic abilities. We all understand very clearly that education plays a crucial role for children, as it is the doorway to access knowledge, develop themselves, and become useful citizens for their families, society, and the country.
As a place of rigorous practice and propagation of the Buddha’s teachings and spreading of compassion, Truc Lam Monastery deeply sympathizes with the unfortunate lives of these children. We understand the need to connect positive conditions with people everywhere to awaken and nurture more kindness within each of us. Therefore, right after the monastery officially started operations in 2021, we boldly established the “Truc Lam Scholarship” fund. The aim of this fund is to support and encourage the academic spirit of children from disadvantaged families, especially those with good academic abilities.
Up to now, the Truc Lam Scholarship, with the support of benefactors, has been contributing to providing many precious opportunities for poor, studious children who cannot attend school due to their family’s economic difficulties. This program is the essence of love, sharing, and community responsibility, increasingly creating more motivation for poor, studious students here.
The Truc Lam Scholarship commits to providing 7,000 Rupees or 5,000 Rs & 10 kg of rice (equivalent to 600,000 VND) per month for each scholarship. Although these scholarships are not very large, they are significant in supporting and encouraging poor students to have a chance to go to school. Additionally, we also donate essential items such as shoes, backpacks, books, and school supplies to schools in difficulty in the area. We have also built a playground named Truc Lam Park at Vaani Tamil Vidyayam School, Palakelle, which was inaugurated on June 18, 2024.
Starting with a few small scholarships for some underprivileged students from the early days, by 2024, the Truc Lam Scholarship, thanks to increasing support from benefactors, has granted scholarships to 22 students, including 1 PhD, 3 university students, and 18 students from middle to high school. Each scholarship is a story full of emotions that touch our hearts.
We hope that the Truc Lam Scholarship fund continues to receive blessings from benefactors’ kind hearts to operate long-term and according to the Dharma, creating many individuals with good qualities and thinking in education.
