DISTRIBUTING MEALS TO THE HOMELESS
In a country rich in tradition but with a very low standard of living, there are still many homeless people sleeping on the sidewalks and in public parking lots. From 8:30 PM, they start to lay down on benches at bus and train stations. Some people, not having a single grain of rice in their stomach, still have to find a place to sleep because they have not had a place to lie down all day. Next to them is a bundle of old, soft clothes with a dirty, black blanket that hasn’t been washed in a long time.
On the full moon day of each month, Truc Lam Zen Monastery distributes 100 meal boxes to the homeless sleeping at the bus and train stations in Kandy city. This meaningful charity activity has been maintained by Venerable Phap Quang since 2022.
Anyone who has participated in distributing meals to the homeless with Truc Lam Zen Monastery understands why Venerable Phap Quang and the other monks maintain this program once a month. When the monks arrive to distribute meals, the people are very orderly and do not jostle. Before receiving the meal box, they kneel and bow according to Sri Lankan tradition and thank the monks. The boundless happiness when the homeless receive a vegetarian meal in the evening on the full moon day each month is evident.
